It was cold and rainy, which was tepical weather for a funeral. Black umbrellas covered the mourners as they said good bye to the loved one who had passed.
Caligo's tears had frozen to her cheeks and her ears were burning red from the cold. She held back a small sob while her stepmother stood errect.
Once her father was finally in his grave, they threw in small red roses to cover him. Caligo was first to toss hers to her father.
"Bye daddy." She said closing her eyes. She hugged her stepmother, Clarice.
It was time to go home, so Clarice took Caligo to their white Mercedes. Caligo cried until she fell asleep.
Warm and cozy, Caligo woke up in her bed. She looked at her pink walls and the small rocking chair her grandmother gave her. She remembered her dad died which made her cry a bit more. She walked to the balcony of the stairs. Clarice stood at the front door talking into a phone. Caligo watched her stepmother pace the hallway.
"I cant keep her. There must be some uncle or aunt who could-" Clarice was cut off by a man on the other side. "Really? There's no one?- Well I do want the money, but he didnt leave any for me?" She paused. "Alright fine." Clarice hung up and leaned on the phone desk.
Even though she was six years old, Caligo knew what Clarice meant and she was not surprised. Clarice had always been jealous of Caligo and her father's relationship.
((dream))"I cant keep her. There must be some uncle or aunt who could-" Clarice was cut off by a man on the other side. "Really? There's no one?- Well I do want the money, but he didnt leave any for me?" She paused. "Alright fine." Clarice hung up and leaned on the phone desk.
Caligo woke up. She looked at her dark red walls and her dark black furniture. It was her sixteenth birthday. 'A lot has changed.' She thought. She got dressed in her usual "goth get up" as her stepmom Clarice would call it. She walked down the stairs in her black combat boots.
"Good Morning!" Clarice said in her fake welcoming voice. "Is there anything in your closet thats, you know, a bit more cheerful?" She said placing her hand on Caligo's shoulder.
"Dont touch me." Caligo said. Clarice made a confused face.
"I made you breakfast." Clarice said to Caligo.
"I dont eat breakfast." Caligo said. She used to go out with her father everyday for breakfast.
Caligo stepped out of her perfect house and shut the door on Clarice as she was calling "Have fun!" She could have sworn that she heard Clarice call her a brat.
Caligo walked up to her school building and then kept walking. She didnt feel like going to that place today.
Caligo walked until she got to the cemetery that her father was in. the poor man died of a heartattack at age 39. Caligo knew that this was not possible he was totally healthy. She blamed Clarice. Clarice never loved him, she was in their relationship only for his money. Caligo wanted to visit him, but was affraid that she would cry. She pulled herself together and strolled to her father's grave.
Caligo thought she would not cry but she could not help it. Tears came down her face. A white Mercedes pulled up to the grave site.
"Caligo why arent you at school?" Clarice said furiously.
"I dont like it." Caligo said.
"Then I can homeschool you." Clarice said.
"Like you would take your precious little time and homeschool me! You hate me!" Caligo yelled.
"Oh Caligo I dont hate you." She paused. "I find you and me very, similar." She played with Caligo's hair.
"Stop it!" Caligo said. She swatted her stepmom's hand away.
"Your more like me and your mother." She smiled slyly.
"You have no right to talk about my mother." Caligo said clenching her fists.
"Your not much like your father though. He was kind, gentle really. You should be ashamed." Clarice said sternly.
"Dont be the judge of me! You'd be the same if you could see!" Caligo screamed. She ran to the Mercedes and drove off with her stepmom's car and purse.
She looked back at her stepmom to laugh at her pitching a fit, but she was not there.
Caligo rode home in the car and ran to her room. She grabbed all her stuff and shoved it into her bag. Then she ran out of the door only to get blocked by Clarice.
"How did you?- Move!" Caligo yelled hoping to scare Clarice like any other day.
Clarice shook her head in disrespect. "Oh Caligo. You cannot control me, Im your superior!" She said laughing.
"You will never be my superior, you cow!" Caligo shouted.
"Man you are really like me." Clarice smiled. "and thats no way to treat your own mother?" She made a pouty face.
"Your not my mother." Caligo said.
"I am. Caligo, your my daughter. We may not like each other, but we are blood." She smiled again.
"What?" Caligo said. "I may have only been two when I met her but I remember her! She loved my father."
"That was before I had you. We never expected to have you. I got jealous of your relationship. So I pulled a few strings amd here we are now." Clarice said.
"You killed him!?" Caligo asked in fear.
"Heavens no. I dont want blood under my fingernails." Clarice said. "I captured him. He lives with me now at Mt Olympis."
Caligo started to cry again, but she kept a brave face. "Oh and where is that? Antartica?"
"No silly. And stop crying. Its not attractive. We need to leave now." Clarice said taking Caligo's hand.
"Im not going anywhere with you!" Caligo yelled and snatched her hand back.
"I might let you see your father!" Clarice said in a sing-songy voice.
Reluctantly, Caligo got into the Mercedes. "Where are we going?" She asked drying her tears.
"I'll explain on the way there." Clarice said sighing.
